KICKMEM
Released to public domain 29 May 89
This program is for those hardware hacking A1000 users, who have done the
AMAZING COMPUTING 512K upgrade. Kickmem will patch your kickstart disk
to perform addmem during kickstart. It's great for getting rid of all those
addmem commands from your startup sequence. It also allows warm boot
surviveability of Ram disk devices. The old addmem command faithfuly clears
memory on re-boot and trashes everything memory resident.
By installing kickmem it's just like having auto-configuring memory.
KickMem replaces the code on the kickstart disk that draws the hand
and disk on the startup screen for WorkBench so don't be suprised,
when you find it missing.
The 1.2 addmem patch is based on the KickPlay docs written by Dan Babcock
found on Amicus disk 25. The patch for 1.3 was just a matter of some more
snooping and searching around with a disk editor. Oh yes, kickmem disables
kickstart from trying to allocating your memory to CHIP_MEMORY. So there is
no need for the AMAZING's 2 chip fix either.
HERE'S HOW TO DO IT.
Two programs are provided.
KickMem1 - for use with KickStart 1.2 (v33.18)
Kickmem2 - for use with KickStart 1.3 (v34.5)
Just type the name of the program you would like and it will prompt
you for the kickstart disk in df1:. PLEASE dont use your original disk.
This program is completely public domain and I disclaim everything
(except for any credit that is due of course). Modifying your disk are at
your own risk so be careful. After KickMem announces it has completed,
just re-Kick your machine using the modified disk. Don't forget to remove
all those addmem commands from your startup-sequence or you'll guru.
Kickmem does some checking before it writes all over your disk:
- That there really is a disk there.
- That it's not write protected.
- That it is a kickstart disk of the correct version.
- Also reports any disk errors encountered.
Kickmem can be used for other types of memory expansions. I've included
the source for KickMem and the addmem .asm code to allow anyone to "Doctor"
there own kickstart disk.
